Ecotourism in Kyrgyzstan

The main attraction of the tour is Issyk-Kul Lake, the pearl of Kyrgyzstan, one of the deepest and the largest lakes not only in the region but also in the world. The name is translated as “hot lake”; the waters of the lake never freeze. Bokonbayevo village located on the south shore of the lake is now rapidly developed to become the best eco-tour base. The yurt camps of the eco base are located on the shore of Issyk-Kul Lake. This is the starting point for climbing the Terskey Ala-Too or visit the waterfalls and hot springs. The eco-base is the most visited during summer months; Birds of Prey Festival is a spectacular show of falconers demonstrating the hunting skills and techniques of eagles, falcons, and hawks.

Another amazing place on the Great Silk Road trail is Jeti-Oguz gorge located 28 km from Karakol. The name is translated as “Seven bulls”; the red cliffs of the gorge look like bulls standing side by side.

The view of the furious cliffs is changed by the green slopes of the mountains. Still, Jeti-Oguz is more popular with its hot springs located at an altitude of 2200 meters above the sea level. Hot springs are great for the treatment of nervous diseases and rheumatism. Getting wider the gorge opens a magnificent view to the mountains covered with Tien-Shan firs that are hundreds of years old. Yurt settlement is a wonderful place to stay overnight and take a closer look at the authentic life of the locals. Further to the Jeti-Oguz River banks, there are small lakes and waterfalls, zoological reserve and a vertical rocky wall that closes the valley. The panorama is completed by the smashing view of the Oguz Bashi peak (“Bull’s Head”) rising 5170m high. The views of Jeti-Oguz are often compared with the panorama of the Swiss Alps.
