Yeghegnadzor

The town of Yeghegnadzor is the administrative center of Vayodzor province and is located on the right bank of the river Arpa at a distance of 119 km from Yerevan. It is one of the oldest settlements in Armenia, founded in the V century. In ancient times, the town was the residence of the respected princely families of Armenia, among which the most famous were Orbelians.

At this time Yeghegnadzor is a small town with a population of about 8000 people.

Among the sights, you can see the old church preserved from the V-th cent. As well as the stone old Agarkadzor bridge over Arpa River, which was built in the XIII-th cent.

Not far from Yeghegnadzor at a distance of 5 km once was a major educational center of medieval Armenia, the heart of Armenian culture – Gladzor University. Only ruins have reached to our days. But in Surb Hakob church in Vernashen village, there is a museum, where you can get acquainted with the exhibits of the university.
