Day 2 - Geghard - Garni - Yerevan

Garni - Geghard
This day you will visit the monastery of Geghard, where the Holy Lance was kept. According to the Bible the Roman legionnaire pierced by this lance the body of Jesus Christ. The monastery is situated on the slope of an almost closed amphitheater with sheer cliffs, smashing into the blue sky, surrounded by harsh and majestic nature. Geghard Monastery has majestic inside: twilight stone halls, carved into the rock, walls with carvings and quiet murmur wafting from the source wall give a particularly mysterious view. Many pilgrims come here to dial holy water through believing in its healing properties. Tour continues to the pagan temple of Garni, dedicated to the God of sun “Mithra”. Garni Temple is picturesquely situated on a high rocky cliff. On three sides, it is surrounded by deep gorges, picturesque vertical rocks and fancy sheer stones. Lunch will be served in the fresh air, where you will see how to bake Armenian traditional bread “Lavash”. Returning to Yerevan, you will visit Vernissage (a souvenir market under the open air), where thousand various souvenirs and works of local masters can be found. A wonderful end of day will be “Armenian National Show”. In this bright atmosphere highly professional dancers, choreographers and musicians are involved. Our next stop is Echmiadzin – shrine of all Armenians, where the residence of the Catholicos and the Supreme Patriarch of the Armenian Apostolic Church is located. In this city the main is the Cathedral – the ancient Christian church in Armenia, one of the firsts all around Christian world. According to the legend, the first stone, the foundation of this church, was established in 301 by Gregory the Illuminator – the first catholicos of Armenian Church. The internal painting of Cathedral, completed in the 18th century, is eye-catching with Byzantine luxury. The museum of “Treasure chest of Echmiadzin” is situated in the eastern part of Cathedral, where unique exhibits are presented. One of the most famous treasures is Saint Geghard (lance), a piece of Noah's Ark, as well as many other valuable artifacts and works of art.
