The monastery complex of Makaravank is located in the Tavush Region, 6 km away from the village of Achajur, near the town of Ijevan. It proudly stands on the picturesque wooded Paitatap Mountain merging with the surrounding fairy tale landscapes. The way from the village to the monastery will pass through dense oak forests and amazing glades covered with flowers.
Founded in the X-XIII centuries, Makaravank was surrounded by powerful fortress walls. The complex is built of pink andesite and red tuff, with the addition of greenish stones. The whole composition of ancient buildings looks so harmonious with the surrounding nature.
The very first building of the monastery complex is the Makaravank church. The outer and inner walls are richly decorated with ornaments. The main church of the monastery complex is the church of St. Astvatsatsin, also built of pink and red stones. The facade of the church is decorated with a pigeon and a sundial.
Monastery complex Makaravank is a medieval architectural masterpiece, which is compared with the monasteries of Noravank and Gandzasar.
