Halidzor Fortress

Halidzor Fortress is located on a small hill, on the bank of the Vokhchi River, near the town of Kapan, Syunik Region. Halidzor was built in the XVII century and served as the family castle of the Melik-Parsadanian dynasty.

The history of the fortress is connected with the great commander David Bek from the Parsadanian dynasty. David Bek was the leader of the liberation movement, and the fortress of Halidzor served as a military fort.

The fortress had powerful defensive walls with towers. Thanks to the protective walls and inaccessible location, it played an important defensive role for Syunik Region.

On the territory of the fortress, there are the ruins of the church of St. Astvatsatsin, which at one time was a functioning women’s monastery. During the movement lead by David Bek, the nuns also took part in the battles. David Bek, who died in one of the battles, is buried at the monastery cemetery of the fortress of Halidzor.
